Let’s Get Back to School: 4 tips for all families

Guest blog written by Maxine DeVeaux, UVA Alumni, Summer & Fall Intern

After another warm and fun-filled summer, the new school year has arrived! It's an exciting time, but also one full of change and adjustments for everyone at home.

STEP INTO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR ON THE RIGHT FOOT WITH THESE TIPS:

#1 Sleep = Success

Kids need at least 10 hours of sleep each night for their minds and bodies to thrive. Set a bedtime routine that works for your family and stick with it!

#2 We are what we eat

Start the day with a balanced breakfast low in sugar and make vegetables and fruits an everyday part of lunches and snacks.

#3 School and play go hand in hand

Playtime and fun are still super important even after summer break ends. Try to make time for active and imaginative play, especially on busy days.

#4 Change is hard and that’s okay!

Change is hard for all of us. Shifting from summer to school is a big routine shift for kids (and parents too). Most children will experience some anxiety when transitioning to a new school year. Try adding some deep breathing and other mindfulness exercises into your day.
