Shade, SPF, and Smiles: Sun Safety Tips for UV Safety Month 😎

July brings long sunny days, backyard playtime, and family adventures outdoors, making it the perfect time to spotlight UV Safety Month. Whether it’s a beach trip, a pool day, or just playing in the yard, kids tend to soak up a lot of sun over time. Fortunately, a few easy sun safety tips can go a long way in keeping their skin protected both now and for years to come:

  • Don’t Forget the Sunscreen!: Choose a broad-spectrum mineral-based sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 30 or higher and apply it generously 15–30 minutes before going outside. Don’t forget spots like the ears, the back of the neck, and tops of the feet. Avoid chemical-based sunscreens with things like oxybenzone as they are dangerous to children. Make sure to reapply every 2 hours or more often if swimming or sweating!

  • Dress for (Sun) Success: Choose breathable, lightweight clothing that covers the skin without overheating your child. Long sleeves and longer shorts made from loose fabric can offer protection. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection for added coverage!

  • Seek Shade During Peak Hours: Try to limit outdoor play between 10AM and 4PM when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If your child is outside, encourage breaks under a tree, umbrella, or canopy regularly to ensure less exposure to UV rays.

  • Stay Hydrated: Sun and heat can lead to dehydration fast. Make sure your child drinks water regularly, even if they don’t feel thirsty.

  • Watch Out for Sneaky Sunburns: UV rays can still reach the skin on cloudy or breezy days. Keep up with your sun protection routine even when the weather doesn’t necessarily feel super hot or sunny.

Sun protection doesn’t have to be complicated. With some simple precautionary measures, you can reduce your child’s risk of sunburn and support lifelong skin health. Keep it light, keep it fun, and make sun safety part of your summer routine! 🧴
