Summer is loading! Make it healthy and fun!
Hello there!
Can you believe we’re already halfway through the year? June is that perfect mix of warm-but-not-too-hot days, longer evenings, and all the excitement of summer plans kicking off. Whether you're soaking up the sun at a rooftop brunch, cheering on the Nationals at a baseball game, or catching a free outdoor movie, June in DC is full of opportunities to have fun and stay well.
As a pediatrician, a mom, and someone who loves being outside, I want to share some quick, practical ways to keep your family thriving this summer—without stressing yourself out.
1. Hydration is Your Bestie
That DC heat creeps up fast! Whether you’re hitting the National Zoo, walking at the Wharf, or chasing your little ones around a splash pad, keeping water on hand is a must. If plain water feels boring, try infusing it with fresh fruit or grabbing coconut water for extra electrolytes.
2. Get Outside Early (or Late!)
Mornings and evenings are golden hours in the summer. Take advantage of DC’s free outdoor activities like yoga in the park, early morning walks around the Tidal Basin, or a sunset picnic on the National Mall. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival kicks off at the end of the month—so go soak in some culture without overheating in the midday sun!
3. Prioritize Skin & Eye Protection
Hats and clothing that protects your skin is the gold standard especially for babies! But just remember, sunscreen isn’t just for beach days! Whether you’re biking on the Anacostia River Trail or exploring Eastern Market, apply your sun protection (yes, even for the babies!). I recommend a simple zinc oxide mineral barrier cream. And don’t forget sunglasses—those little eyes need protection too!
4. Keep Summer Snacks Simple
When it’s too hot to cook, lean into easy, nutritious meals. Think hummus & veggies, yogurt parfaits, or frozen fruit smoothies. Bonus points if you make them together—kids love being little sous-chefs in the kitchen!
5. Make Health Fun for the Whole Family
Summer is the perfect time to model healthy habits! Try a family bike ride, a weekend hiking trip at Rock Creek Park, or even just a backyard water balloon fight to get everyone moving.
At the end of the day, summer is about balance—enjoying the warm weather, making memories, and keeping yourself and your little ones feeling their best. So go ahead, plan that day trip to the beach, stay up a little later for the fireworks, and savor the season!
